Cursive Writing A to Z

Cursive capital and small letters on four-line copy

Capitals sit from line 1 down to line 3. Small letters are sorted into three heights: middle space, tall, and tail. Teach capitals first, then small letters, then joining.

Capitals and small letters, Rs 149Interiors are still being drawn, so this is a reservation through the contact page. No payment until the file is ready to send.

Parents usually ask this as one question, so here is the short answer. Teach the 26 capitals first, then the 26 small letters, then joining. Capitals use larger strokes and almost no tails, so the child builds pencil control on the easier set. Small letters demand height judgement, which is the part school teachers actually mark.

How the heights work

Bbline 1line 2line 3line 4

Small letters split into three groups on four-line copy. Getting a child to name the group before writing removes most corrections.

GroupLettersWhere it sits
Middle spacea, c, e, i, m, n, o, r, s, u, v, w, xBetween line 2 and line 3
Tallb, d, h, k, l, tUp to line 1, sitting on line 3
Tailg, j, p, q, yBody in the middle space, tail down into line 4

Two letters break the pattern. Small f runs from line 1 to line 4, the only letter that uses all four. Small t is tall but stops a little short of line 1, which is why it looks wrong when a child makes it as tall as l.

Capitals are simpler to place. All of them start at or just under line 1 and finish on line 3. None of them drop into line 4, though capital J and capital Z can loop below the base line before joining.

Which order inside each set

  1. Capitals in stroke families. Slant family A, M, N, V, W, X. Round family C, G, O, Q, S. Down stroke and bowl family B, D, P, R. Loop family E, F, I, J, L, T.
  2. Small letters by height. Middle space letters first, then tall letters, then tail letters. Inside the middle space group, do the round ones (a, c, e, o) before the humped ones (m, n, r).
  3. Match the pair. Once a letter is steady, write the capital and the small form side by side, like Aa and Bb. That is how school copies test it.
  4. Join the small letters. Start with an, in, on, un, then am, im, om. The exit hook of the first letter becomes the entry stroke of the second.
  5. Capital plus small in a name. Write the child's own name. A capital followed by small letters is the join every child needs on day one of school.

Where children go wrong

Practise both sets on the same page

The Rs 149 book puts the capital and the small form of each letter on facing rows, so the child sees the pair the way the school copy asks for it. Stroke arrows on the model letter, tracing rows, then empty four-line rows.

Questions about capitals and small letters

Should capital letters be taught before small letters in cursive?

Yes. Capitals use bigger strokes, they sit in one space from line 1 to line 3, and most of them have no tail. Children gain control on the easier set, then apply it to small letters, where height judgement starts to matter.

Why does my child write small letters as tall as capitals?

The child is copying shape without judging space. Ask them to name the group before writing, middle space or tall or tail, and to touch line 2 with the pencil first. That fixes more copies than repeated writing does.

Do capital letters join to the next letter in cursive?

Some do and some do not. A, C, E, H, K, M, N, U and W lead into the next letter. B, D, P, R, T and V normally finish on their own, so the following small letter starts with its own entry stroke.

Is it wrong if my child prints capitals and writes small letters in cursive?

Many Indian schools accept it in Class 1 and mark it strictly by Class 2. If the school copy shows cursive capitals, teach the cursive form early, because relearning a capital after a year of printing is slower than learning it once.
