Cursive writing for Class 1
Class 1 is where most Indian schools switch the copy from print to cursive. The child already knows the letters, so the work is about stroke direction, height on four lines, and joining two letters.

By Class 1 the homework copy usually says cursive at the top of the page and nobody has taught the child the strokes. That is the gap. The child knows what a letter looks like from UKG, and now has to make it in one flowing movement, starting and finishing in the right place on four lines.
A ten minute plan that fits a school night
- Two minutes of warm up. Loops, curves and slants across one four-line row. It settles the grip before letters start.
- Four minutes on one new letter. Trace the model three times slowly, then write it four times without looking at the model.
- Two minutes of revision. Two letters from last week, written once each. This is the step families skip, and it is why letters slide back.
- Two minutes of joining or the name. A join pattern like an or in, or the child's own name with a capital and small letters.
- Stop on time. End the session while the writing is still neat. A tired hand practises the wrong shape.
What Class 1 teachers actually mark
- Letters that sit in the wrong space. A small letter above line 2 loses marks even when the shape is good.
- Tails that do not reach line 4 on g, j, p, q and y.
- Capital letters mixed into the middle of a word.
- Letters formed from the wrong end, for example small a started at the top right instead of the belly. It looks fine in Class 1 and blocks joining in Class 2.
- Gaps. Letters inside a word touch each other, and words have a finger gap between them.
Order for the year
First term is capitals A to Z, two or three a week, with the child's name written every day. Second term is small letters, taught by height group rather than alphabetically, so a, c, e and o come before b, d and h. Third term is joining, two letters at a time, then short words, then one copied sentence a day.

Questions from Class 1 parents
Is Class 1 too early for cursive?
No, if the child can already form print letters and hold a pencil without pain. Most Indian schools start cursive in Class 1. What does harm is speed: long copies, fast writing, and no attention to where the letter starts.
My child's cursive is neat but very slow. Is that a problem?
Not in Class 1. Accuracy first, speed later. Speed builds on its own once joining is comfortable, usually during Class 2. Pushing for speed in Class 1 tends to break letter shapes that were already correct.
Should Class 1 children use a pencil or a pen?
Pencil. It lets the child erase and try the stroke again, and most Indian schools do not allow pen before Class 3. A simple HB pencil with a triangular grip is enough. Mechanical pencils break under the pressure Class 1 children apply.
How much cursive practice a day is right for Class 1?
Ten minutes on a school day, and it can be less on a heavy homework day. Two short sessions beat one long one, and stopping while the writing is still neat matters more than finishing a page.
