When one letter looks fine, but the whole name does not

A child may manage a small letter neatly on its own.

You say, "Please do it properly."

Your child says, "I am doing it properly."

Try replacing that instruction with something you can both see:

"Let us check where these small letters sit."

Or:

"Look at the first letter. Now look at the letters after it."

Tuesday: Look at the small-letter bodies

Return to the same name if needed.

Look at the small-letter bodies between line 2 and line 3. Notice which parts stay there and which parts extend above or below.

Do not turn one uneven letter into a discussion about the whole page.

Wednesday: Pay attention to joining

Choose a short section of a name and look at how its letters connect.

Practise slowly enough to notice the join. Speed does not need to be today's target.

Thursday: Write the whole name

Bring the capital, small letters and joins together.

Look from the first letter to the last. Has the writing stayed on the line? Are the small-letter bodies reasonably consistent?

Choose one useful correction, not five.

Friday: Repeat and compare

Reprint a sheet if your child needs another go.

Compare an earlier attempt with a later one. Point to something specific: "These letters are sitting on the line here."

If the same difficulty remains, carry that focus into the next session. A week is a practice routine, not a promise of perfect handwriting.
