How to write the letter S in cursive

Capital S starts below line 1 with a curve to the left, comes down in an S bend to line 3, then finishes with a small curl. Small s is the same bend inside the middle space between line 2 and line 3, and the top of the letter curves back on itself before the bend begins.

What to watch on four-line copy

Watch the top. A flat top makes s look like the number 5.
The bottom closes into a small point that carries the join into the next letter.
Small s never rises above line 2.

The mistake to correct first

s written as a mirror image, opening the wrong way. Let the child trace over the model with their own pencil twice before writing it alone.

Practice strip

Trace the shape three times slowly, then write the pair on your own four-line copy. Two minutes a day beats one long session on Sunday.
